The World Test Championship (WTC) 2025-27 cycle has commenced with intense competition, as three Test series have already started to define the standings. Australia and England have quickly risen to the top, while India and the West Indies are looking to recover.
Australia and England hold the first two positions in the WTC table, both with a perfect 100 points percentage after securing wins in their opening matches. Sri Lanka is currently third, having concluded their two-match series against Bangladesh with one win and one draw. Bangladesh is positioned fourth with one draw and one loss.
Meanwhile, reigning champions South Africa, New Zealand, and Pakistan are yet to start their WTC campaigns in this cycle.
India's first match was challenging, despite a strong effort at Headingley. The team had five centurions but ultimately faced defeat as England completed a dramatic chase, taking a 1-0 lead in the five-Test Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy.
Chasing a target of 371, England benefited from a solid opening partnership between Ben Duckett (149) and Zak Crawley. Joe Root and debutant Jamie Smith then guided the chase to victory with an unbeaten partnership. India's middle-order collapse and missed opportunities in the field proved costly.
Following the match, Shubman Gill acknowledged that India had opportunities but failed to capitalize. He mentioned that India aimed for a larger lead, but a lack of runs from the lower order affected their plans.
India is now focusing on the second Test at Edgbaston, aiming for a quick recovery to keep their WTC campaign competitive. Currently, they are positioned near the bottom of the table along with the West Indies.
The WTC cycle began with Sri Lanka's tour of Bangladesh on June 17 and will continue until the final in 2027.
