Following India's defeat to England in the recent Test match, cricket legend Sunil Gavaskar has urged the team management to consider strategic changes to the playing XI. A key recommendation is the inclusion of Kuldeep Yadav, a move Gavaskar believes could significantly bolster India's chances in the upcoming second Test in Birmingham.

Gavaskar specifically suggested that Yadav should replace Shardul Thakur, emphasizing the potential advantage wrist spin could offer given the expected conditions at the Birmingham pitch. "Whether Jasprit Bumrah is fit or not, I think Kuldeep Yadav has to come into the team... because the Birmingham pitch will be one where there will be just a little bit of help for the wrist spinner," Gavaskar stated.
Thakur, who was making his first Test appearance in over two years, struggled to leave a mark on the game. His figures included bowling six overs for 38 runs without taking a wicket in the first innings. He also accumulated a mere five runs across both innings. Despite a brief moment of brilliance where he dismissed Ben Stokes and Harry Brook in quick succession during the second innings, Gavaskar felt that Thakur’s overall performance was not convincing enough.
Kuldeep Yadav, a leg-spinner, has only played one Test match in England back in 2018 at Lord's, where he didn't manage to take any wickets. Nevertheless, Gavaskar is confident that Yadav’s variety could prove crucial in Birmingham.
Gavaskar also voiced his concerns regarding the middle order, particularly focusing on debutant Sai Sudharsan and Karun Nair, both of whom were dismissed for ducks in the first innings at Headingley. This triggered a collapse after India had reached a strong position at 430/3, eventually being all out for 471.
While Gavaskar isn't currently advocating for their immediate removal from the team, he did hint at a possible reshuffle if India were to fall 0-2 behind in the series.
“If things don't go well in the second Test, maybe Sai (Sudharsan) and Karun (Nair). I don't want to drop them at the moment. Then I'd also look at Washington Sundar, so that it really gives you a more solid batting, and also get a little more variety as far the bowling is concerned,” he said.
Following their defeat at Headingley, the Indian team will be determined to level the series when they face England at Edgbaston, starting on July 2.
