Former India coach Greg Chappell believes Rishabh Pant is revolutionizing the game of cricket with his unconventional and aggressive batting style. Chappell emphasized Pant's match-winning capabilities, noting his near success in turning the tide at Headingley.
India faced defeat in the Headingley Test, but Pant's exceptional performance, marked by centuries in both innings, underscored his ability to shift the momentum of a game.
Chappell lauded Pant's rapid scoring rate, which creates opportunities for winning matches. "His was a phenomenal performance," Chappell stated, adding that Pant's shots often defy traditional coaching manuals. "He is reinventing the game as a batsman," he affirmed.
Pant achieved a milestone by becoming the second wicketkeeper-batter, following Andy Flower, to record a century in each innings of a Test match.
Chappell acknowledged the impact of modern technology and advanced bats, enabling shots that were previously impossible. He described Pant as an exciting player to watch, known for his unpredictable approach from the very first ball. Pant's willingness to take on fast bowlers and execute innovative shots keeps the opposition constantly challenged.
Drawing comparisons, Chappell likened Pant to another iconic wicketkeeper, Adam Gilchrist.
He said, "What an exciting cricketer, what a player to have on your team. When I first saw him, he was a different sort of player, of course, but he reminded me very much of Adam Gilchrist. You know the difference that it can make to a team to have a wicketkeeper that can bat at that level and score runs quickly."
Chappell also commented on Shubman Gill's performance as captain, suggesting he demonstrated a promising start and is poised for future improvement. Despite India's loss, Chappell highlighted the positive aspects of their performance. He believes Gill will gain valuable experience and develop into a better captain. Chappell noted that the match outcome could have been different with a few more catches and stronger performances from the tailenders. He remains optimistic about India's chances in the remaining Test matches.
